Confident & Au Naturale!!!

Solange Knowles, Nicki Minaj, and Tia & Tamera Mowry; what do these four ladies have in common? They’re all embracing the beauty of their natural tresses. Once upon a time, women felt that in order to be beautiful they had to straighten their hair. However that is a thought of the past because gradually more and more women are flaunting their natural locks and saying “to hell with societies standards of beauty!”

Afros, locks, twists, curls, and braids! Women are gradually letting go of the relaxer and transitioning back to their natural hair texture. Now this is not a post to contribute to the silly “natural vs. relaxed debate” or persuade you to convert to natural hair, but to shed light on the cultural change in attitudes we have towards our hair. Lets tread back to the time when straight hair alone was considered beautiful, now there were people who did rock their natural hair but was it socially accepted? How many girls were chastised because their hair was too coarse, too curly, or “untamable?” A majority of women chemically straightened their hair not because they preferred to, but because natural hair textures were viewed by society as ugly, and if you chose to flaunt your natural locks, you were labeled as a social misfit.

However we are in a new day and age, the “natural hair movement” is seen everywhere. From celebrities to social media, more and more women are making the decision to go natural. However, I wouldn’t label this cultural change as a “natural hair movement.” I believe that it goes far beyond just hair. Women are gradually finding their confidence and defining their own beauty! Hair just happens to be one of the outlets. So whether you’re hair is curly, straight, kinky, coily, relaxed, texturized, amplified with tracks, wigs, or even if you are bald, remember YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL! And as long as you are happy that is all that matters.

So a round of applause to women all of the globe, we have reached a point where our hair care choices are no longer limited.  Let us inspire the next generation of girls that no matter their hair preference they are beautiful. Confidence is YOU, Confidence is ME, Confidence is US!   Stay Beautiful!
